Wood and Brass Frame

You will need the following things for this tutorial

Paint Shop Pro 7

My selection and a gold gradient both of which are included in a zip file you can download here.  The gradient needs to be put into your Paint Shop Pro gradient folder.

You will also need a picture you want to add to the frame.  I used one of my cats.

You may send a link to this tutorial through email and to e groups, you may not send the tutorial

Step 1

Open a new image 300 pixels X 200 pixels with a transparent background.

Step 2

Go to Selections/Load from Disk and load ovalframe.sel and flood fill with the finished wood pattern that comes with PSP.  Do NOT deselect.

Step 3

Go to Effects/3D Effects/ Inner Bevel and apply a bevel with the following settings.

Step 4

Go to Selections/Modify/Contract and contract 10 pixels.  Then flood fill with the gold gradient included in the zip file set to Linear Gradient/ Angel 133/Repeats 0.

Step 5

Deselect and add a new Raster Layer.  This is the layer where you are going to put your text. Text color does not matter because we will be deleting the layer it is on later.  Place your text so it fits within the large gold section of your plaque.  Do not deselect.

Step 6

We are now going to make your text look like it is engraved.  To do this add a new raster layer.  Go to Effects/3D Effects Cutout and apply a cutout with an Offset of 2, Opacity of 90, Blur of 2, and Color Black.  Do not deselect because we are not done.  Now go to Effects/3D Effects/ Drop Shadow and add a drop shadow with an Offset of 1, Opacity of 100, Blur of 0, and Color White.  Deselect.

Step7

Go to your Layers Palette and find Layer 2 and make it your active layer. Go to Layers/Delete.  Then go to Layers/Merge/Merge Visible.

Step 8

Now to add a picture.  Open the picture then Window/Duplicate and close your original. Now go back to your framed image and use your magic wand to select the oval opening. The go to Selections/Modify/Expand and expand 2 pixels.

Step 9

Add a new Raster Layer and move it to the bottom.

Step 10

Using your Cloning Brush, right click a bit to the left and above the part of your picture you want to be framed.  In your frame, left click and hold to a bit to the left and above your oval opening  to fill in with your picture.  Do not let go of the left mouse button until you are finished. You may need to undo and start over again to get it positioned where you want. If need be you can also resize your picture just remember to sharpen after resizing.

Step 11

Now to add glass to our frame.  With your oval still selected add a new layer.  Go to Effects/3D Effects/Cutout and add a cut out with the following setting.  Offset 2, Opacity 80, Blur 20, Color Black.

Step 12

Repeat Step 11, including adding a new layer, except this time set your Offset to -2.

Step 13

Now to add a highlight so it looks like glass. Add a new raster layer.  Then set your background color to white.  Select your draw tool and in your tools options palette set it to the following.

Using the image below to guide you, click at one and hold your left mouse button down and drag it to 2 then let go.  Click once at three then click again.

You should have something like this.

Now go to Effects/Blur/Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 5.00

Merge all your layers and you are finished.
